Surprise!

Last Friday, John and I surprised Maria and Benjamin with a trip up to Frankenmuth, Michigan. They had a half day of school and John had taken that day off so we picked them up from school at 12:25. The trip started out shaky when Benjamin came out to the van and said he wasn't feeling well. We asked him the usual "sick" questions: where does it hurt? do you have to go to the bathroom? how long has it hurt? do you think you are going to throw up? what did you have for lunch? (Maria confessed later that she wondered why we were acting so concerned. It made me wonder if Maria thinks that normally we don't care. Am I that cold of a mother? You don't have to answer that.)
We decided he'd be just fine. We
stopped at the Firefly so I could get a Chai and we started on our adventure.
We told the kids that since Luke and David were at Aunt Sue's for the weekend, we were just going to take a nice drive and look at the beautiful fall colors. After about two hours, Maria started to ask questions. "This sure is a long drive. When are we going home?" Finally, Maria saw a Zehnder's Splash Village sign and asked if we could go there. John said, "Yeah, what the heck? Let's do it!" Maria screamed then climbed to the back to wake up Benjamin to tell him. The next hour and a half were torture for them but they survived the wait. We eventually told them that we had it all planned for a couple of months.

There was a huge bucket that filled up every 5-7 minutes or so. A bell would ring just before it would tip over and the kids all tried to get under for the soaking.

Maria and Benjamin just before the water crashes down on them.

Jacob loved the lazy river but this picture was taken just after some water splashed on his face. He wasn't a big fan of the splashing.

The slides were fast and scary but very fun.

Not a great picture but this was taken just after they shot out of the slide into the pool.

In the rush to get David and Luke to meet my parents in Plymouth, I failed to get David's bag into the van so Sue made do with some old clothes she had at home.

Aw, how cool of you guys! That's the stuff childhood memories are made of. Years from now, Maria and Benjamin will be saying, "Remember that time Mom and Dad picked us up from school and took us to the water park?!"

And the picture of David is too funny! Aunt Sue is very resourceful! : o )

David, you're a good sport. And for the sake of moms everyone, don't reminisce one day with, "Remember that time Luke and I got pawned off on Aunt Sue so the rest of you could go have fun at a waterpark and you didn't even remember to send along my own clothes!" Yah, don't do that.
